Luca Esposito murder in Eboli: Tunisian suspect confesses

Luigi “Luca” Esposito, a 53‑year‑old sports journalist from Salerno, was found carbonised in an agricultural field near Cioffi in the Eboli area on 19 July 2026. An autopsy showed he suffered multiple fractures, violent assaults and was still breathing when his body was set alight, indicating death by violent asphyxiation before the fire.

Investigations led by the Carabinieri’s Nucleo Investigativo of Salerno and the provincial prosecutor identified a 26‑year‑old Tunisian man, irregular in Italy, as the primary suspect. Finger‑print evidence on the victim’s car, phone‑record analysis and limited video‑surveillance helped locate the suspect hidden in an abandoned farmhouse, where he was arrested after a brief attempt to flee. During interrogation he confessed to the homicide, describing a heated argument, a brutal beating that caused numerous fractures, and the subsequent arson using blankets and dry foliage. The suspect is now in custody at Salerno’s prison pending validation of his detention. Political figures, including Matteo Salvini, have commented on the arrest, while the motive behind the killing remains under investigation.
