Journalist María Alejandra Requena shares personal journey of grief and resilience

Venezuelan journalist María Alejandra Requena, known for her work with CNN en Español, has launched a personal project titled ‘Elijo ser feliz’ (I Choose to Be Happy). The initiative, which includes a book, podcast, and speaking engagements, focuses on supporting individuals navigating difficult life transitions and loss.

The project stems from a personal tragedy in April 2018. While covering the Summit of the Americas in Lima, Peru, Requena learned that her husband of nearly 26 years, pilot Ismael Hurtado, had suffered a fatal stroke. His decision to be an organ donor saved three lives.

Requena used writing to process her grief, leading to the publication of her book in 2023. She has since transitioned into building a community centered on resilience and finding new beginnings.
