Micah Reddy: Investigative journalist missing in Djibouti

Investigative journalist Micah Reddy, the Africa coordinator for the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), and his local fixer, Kooki Mahmoud, have gone missing in Djibouti.

Reddy, a dual South African and British citizen, was last in contact with colleagues on Saturday, September 19, around 1:00 p.m. local time. He had been staying at the Escale International Hotel in Djibouti City. While his family and the ICIJ state that his reporting assignment was not focused on Djibouti or its government, local officials have noted that Reddy had not registered for media accreditation in the country.

Press freedom organizations, including the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the Congress of African Journalists (CAJ), have expressed deep concern and are calling on Djiboutian authorities to clarify the pair's whereabouts and ensure their safety. The ICIJ has alerted authorities in both the United Kingdom and South Africa regarding the disappearance.
