Journalist Michael Bonvalot arrested in Steyr while reporting on protest
Journalist Michael Bonvalot was arrested by police in Steyr, Austria, while attempting to report on a gathering of right-wing conspiracy theorists. Bonvalot stated that he was approached by a crowd after being recognized and was subsequently told by police that the assembly leader felt “disturbed” by his presence.
According to Bonvalot, despite presenting a valid press ID and attempting to report from a distance of approximately 50 meters, he was taken into custody and held in a cell for several hours without being interrogated. The Upper Austria State Police Directorate cited “disturbance of public order” as the reason for the arrest. Bonvalot has announced plans to take legal action.
Steyr Mayor Markus Vogl has strongly criticized the police action, describing the arrest as “hard to digest.” Vogl emphasized that both freedom of assembly and press freedom are essential rights and expressed concern that the incident creates an impression of “double standards” in policing. He called for “trust-building measures” from the executive to prevent the undermining of public confidence in the police.
