Journalist Moussa Kaka missing in Niamey, raising press freedom concerns

Moussa Kaka, the director general of Radio Télévision Saraounia and a prominent journalist in the Sahel region, has been missing since August 31 after leaving his office in Niamey. Despite efforts by his family, colleagues, and local security services, his whereabouts remain unknown, and no official notification of arrest has been issued by the transitional authorities.

The disappearance has drawn significant international attention. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has expressed grave concern, calling for an investigation to locate Kaka and establish the circumstances of his disappearance, citing fears of forced disappearance or detention. The Pan-African journalists' organization UJPLA has also demanded his localization and release.

This incident occurs amid heightened political and security tensions in Niger, following the 2023 coup d'état led by General Abdourahamane Tiani. Observers note that the lack of official information regarding Kaka's status reflects growing concerns over press freedom and the safety of media professionals under the current military administration.
