Journalist Moussa Kaka reported missing in Niger

Journalist Moussa Kaka, director of the Radio-Télévision Saraounia group and former RFI correspondent, has disappeared in Niamey, Niger. He was last seen leaving his office on August 31, 2026, around 7:00 PM, and has not been heard from since.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has expressed grave concern regarding the disappearance, calling for an immediate investigation by Nigerien authorities to determine the circumstances. RSF noted that the disappearance occurs during a period of heightened political and security tensions following a coup attempt on August 29.

The incident highlights a significant decline in press freedom within Niger. According to RSF, the country saw the largest drop in its World Press Freedom Index in 2026, falling 37 places to rank 120th. Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, have also noted an increasingly repressive legal framework in the country since the July 2023 coup.
