Journalist Rey David Jiménez García receives death threats in Salina Cruz
Rey David Jiménez García, director of the digital media outlet Salina Cruz Sin Censura, has reported receiving multiple death threats via telephone in Salina Cruz, Oaxaca. The threats allegedly occurred on August 8, 2026, following the journalist's publication of a video report accusing the municipal government of attempting to claim credit for federal public works projects.
Jiménez García has held the municipal president, Daniel Méndez Sosa, responsible for any potential physical or property damage to himself or his family. He has reported the incidents to the Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists, as well as the Human Rights Defender of the People of Oaxaca.
The journalist noted that these incidents follow a history of harassment, including a previous detention and alleged physical aggression by municipal police in June 2026. The National Union of Communication Media shared audio of one call in which an individual used intimidating language, warning the journalist that "death is whispering in your ear."
