Journalist safety and the role of media in democracy
Journalists serve a critical role in democracies by reporting on government decisions, elections, and public spending. In Pacific nations like the Solomon Islands, this work is vital for connecting geographically dispersed communities, though journalists often operate with limited resources.
In July 2025, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted Resolution 59/15 regarding the safety of journalists. This resolution urges governments to protect media professionals from violence, threats, intimidation, and arbitrary detention. It also highlights concerns regarding the misuse of defamation laws to silence reporting. Modern risks have expanded beyond physical attacks to include online harassment, surveillance, and gender-based abuse.
To address these challenges, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) provides guidance on national frameworks to prevent attacks and ensure accountability, aligning with the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists.
