Susy Aponte Polo assassinated in Peru after reporting death threats
Susy Aponte Polo, a journalist and regional governor candidate for Áncash, was assassinated during an electoral visit to a market in Caraz, Peru. The attack, which occurred on a Saturday afternoon, involved a gunman shooting Aponte Polo in the head, resulting in her immediate death and injuring several others.
Authorities have detained three suspects, including a Venezuelan national suspected of being the shooter. The investigation is looking into a possible coordinated crime involving a shooter, a transporter, and a financier. The Peruvian Ministry of the Interior confirmed the arrest of the alleged perpetrator and the seizure of a firearm.
Prior to her death, Aponte Polo had publicly denounced death threats. On September 10, she claimed to have received warnings from sources in three different prisons regarding a planned attack. She specifically accused General Víctor Revoredo Farfán, head of the Criminal Investigation Directorate (Dirincri), of involvement. Following these allegations, the general and other high-ranking police officials were reassigned.
