Journalist unions demand independence guarantees for Adria News Network

International and Serbian journalist organizations, including the IFJ, EFJ, and NUNS, have expressed deep concern regarding the future of editorial independence within the Adria News Network (ANN). The concern follows a response from Alpac Capital CEO Pedro Vargas David to Serbian Minister of Information Boris Bratina.

While Vargas David stated that attempts to influence the media would not succeed and emphasized the need for serious, non-activist journalism, journalist unions argue his rhetoric creates uncertainty. They note that his comments regarding media becoming 'political forces' mirror language often used by Serbian authorities against critical outlets like N1 and Nova S.

The unions are demanding concrete, verifiable guarantees that the change in ownership will not result in politically or commercially motivated changes to editors or staff. They have also called for immediate direct dialogue between Alpac Capital leadership and the employees of the affected media outlets.
