Journalists face various forms of aggression and threats in Latin America

Journalists and media professionals across Latin America are reporting increased instances of physical, verbal, and institutional aggression.

In Argentina, the Círculo de Periodistas Agropecuarios de Córdoba (CIPAG) expressed repudiation toward President Javier Milei after he characterized journalists as “corrupt and mercenaries of lies” and suggested they “should be burned at the stake.” Amnesty International and FOPEA intend to file a complaint with the UN and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights regarding these statements.

In Peru, reporter Carlo Navea was physically assaulted by unidentified individuals following investigations into alleged corruption involving the sister of Senator Daniel Barragán. Additionally, the Colegio de Periodistas del Perú (Arequipa branch) denounced the Regional Government of Arequipa for failing to provide shade or protection for press members during an official ceremony, exposing them to extreme UV radiation levels.

In Honduras, social communicator Francisco Aguirre reported verbal abuse and intimidation by a school director in Choluteca following Aguirre’s reporting on spoiled school meals.

In Mexico, TV Azteca presenter Antonio Betancourt reported being threatened with death by an individual claiming to work for the Álvaro Obregón borough administration after a vehicle collision involving a garbage truck.
