Journalists attacked during Bucharest protests

Multiple journalists were subjected to verbal and physical aggression during a protest in Victory Square, Bucharest, on September 15, according to a statement from Activewatch. Local media organizations have condemned the attacks as unacceptable in a democracy and are calling for condemnation from authorities and political actors.

Reported incidents include journalist Snoop Ioana Moldoveanu being struck, insulted, and threatened while filming protesters. A Realitatea Plus team was also shoved and struck by several masked men. Journalists Cristiana Chițu and cameraman Ruben Lighezan from Realitatea TV required medical attention, while Gabriel Kolbay of Bucuresti.ro reported being struck and having his camera destroyed.

Additionally, Anna Constantin of Recorder was reportedly subjected to verbal harassment and indecent exposure by an aggressor, and David Muntean from the same publication was targeted with spitting. The police have stated they are investigating the incidents to identify those responsible. Media NGOs are demanding swift criminal investigations that respect the protection of journalistic documents and sources.
