Journalists detained during Delhi protests and in Haryana
Multiple press organizations and political figures have condemned the detention and alleged harassment of journalists in India. In New Delhi, several reporters covering protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar were reportedly detained by police. Organizations including the Press Club of India and the Indian Women’s Press Corps stated that journalists were bundled into buses and taken to detention centers, such as Chhatrasal Stadium, despite displaying press identity cards. Some reporters had their phones and equipment seized.
CPI Rajya Sabha MP P Sandosh Kumar has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging that police have obstructed independent reporting and insisted on Press Information Bureau (PIB) accreditation as a prerequisite for covering protests. Kumar argued that this requirement unfairly excludes digital and independent media.
Separately, the Chandigarh Press Club has demanded the release of three senior journalists from Living India News—Sudesh Nain Mor, Saurabh Upadhyay, and Atul Agrawal—who were reportedly taken into custody by Haryana Police. The journalists had been conducting investigative reports regarding the drug menace in Haryana.
