Journalists face violence and obstruction during Tirana protests

Journalism advocacy groups SafeJournalists and the Association of Journalists of Albania (AGSH) have reported an escalation of violence and obstruction against media professionals during ongoing protests in Tirana.

SafeJournalists documented at least 17 incidents during the first five days of mobilization, involving both protesters and police officers. The organization expressed deep concern regarding police interference, specifically noting instances where journalists documenting police actions were targeted. One reported case involved a journalist being beaten by police while filming the use of force against a student.

AGSH reported six specific incidents on October 18, 2026, five of which were linked to the State Police. Notable incidents include the physical obstruction and assault of several reporters, including Hameraldi Agolli, Osman Stafa, Taulant Koplikaj, and Renaldo Salianji. Additionally, Klan News journalist Glidona Daci was reportedly struck with stones by police officers.

Both organizations are calling for accountability and the identification of those responsible to ensure safe reporting conditions and protect media freedom in Albania.
