Journalists in Bosnia and Herzegovina use AI without formal rules

Journalists in Bosnia and Herzegovina are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence into their daily workflows, using tools for interview transcription, translation, research, document summarization, and image processing.

However, the adoption of this technology has outpaced the development of formal editorial and security procedures. Many newsrooms lack written regulations regarding which tools are permitted, how to handle sensitive data, and when to disclose AI usage to the public. Consequently, decisions are often left to individual journalists relying on personal judgment and professional standards.

This lack of centralized guidance raises critical ethical and security questions, including responsibility for AI-generated inaccuracies, the privacy of confidential sources when using chatbots, and the necessity of labeling AI-generated illustrations. Some smaller newsrooms currently rely on recommendations from the European Federation of Journalists rather than internal guidelines.
