Journalists in Peru report lethal extortion and harassment

Peruvian television journalists are reporting a pattern of lethal extortion and harassment. Ximena Carrasco, a journalist for ATV, has denounced Hialmar Enrique Laynes Sánchez for a campaign of intimidation that began in December 2023.

According to Carrasco, the harassment escalated after she left a Facebook Messenger group. The individual allegedly sent threatening messages, death threats, and explicit images. Despite reports being filed with the National Police of Peru, victims express concern over the slow response of the judicial system, noting that the aggressor remains free and continues to target media professionals.
