Journalists in Yemen face increasing threats and physical assaults
Journalists in Yemen are facing escalating threats, including physical assaults, harassment, and forced displacement, according to reports from Reporters Without Borders and the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate.
Reporters Without Borders highlighted that media workers in Houthi-controlled areas face intense pressure, including threats and displacement, while journalists in other regions deal with risks of arrest and killing. The organization noted that some journalists have been forced to flee to Aden or live in exile due to the security environment. In Sanaa, fear of retaliation has reportedly led to self-censorship among media professionals.
In Mukalla, the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate condemned a physical and verbal assault on reporters from Al Mayaria and Yemen Shabab. The journalists were reportedly attacked by four individuals while covering the 64th anniversary of the September 26 Revolution, resulting in the destruction of filming equipment. The Syndicate has called for an urgent investigation and greater protection for media workers amidst the country's ongoing political and military divisions.
