Contardi appeals conviction as Venezuelan activists and journalists receive acquittals
In Argentina, Claudio Contardi's legal team has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court of Justice of Buenos Aires, seeking to overturn his 18-year and 6-month sentence for the sexual abuse of Julieta Prandi. The defense argues that the trial failed to properly utilize magazine interviews from 2015 to 2017 in which Prandi described a 'happy marriage,' which they claim should have been used to challenge her testimony. Prandi has expressed confidence in the finality of the conviction, noting that her children have found peace following the ruling.
In Venezuela, several legal developments have occurred involving political figures and journalists. Luis Camacaro, a regional coordinator for Vente Venezuela, was acquitted in the 'Brazalete Blanco' case after a trial he described as a violation of human rights. Additionally, journalists Luis López and Gabriel González have been granted full freedom following their acquittal on charges of incitement to hatred and association to commit a crime. While these two have been cleared, the Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Prensa (SNTP) continues to demand the closure of judicial cases and the lifting of precautionary measures for journalists Rory Branker, Carlos Julio Rojas, and Jonathan Carrillo. Furthermore, political activist Jeancarlos Rivas has had all judicial restrictions lifted after more than two years of legal proceedings.
