Delhi Police defend security measures and Metro curbs in Supreme Court
Delhi is experiencing significant political unrest following protests against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and the controversial removal of voter names. Protesters, including members of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and various student organizations, have demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
In response to the demonstrations, Delhi Police implemented several preventive measures, including regulating Metro services, restricting mobile internet, and de-notifying Jantar Mantar as an authorized protest site. The police have filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court defending these actions as proportionate to maintain public order, while also alleging that organizers failed to seek necessary permissions.
The crackdown has sparked intense controversy regarding press freedom. Journalists and press freedom groups report that dozens of reporters were detained, assaulted, or obstructed while covering the events. The Delhi Union of Journalists has moved the Supreme Court seeking protection for independent reporters.
Legal disputes have also emerged between law enforcement and the media. An Assistant Commissioner of Police, Vivek Bhagat, filed an FIR against a journalist alleging caste-based slurs and obstruction of duty, following her separate allegations of sexual harassment against him. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is hearing contempt petitions regarding the legality of police actions and the restriction of public services during the unrest.
