Journalists' Union appeals to EU leaders to protect AgoraEU funding

The Journalists' Union (Sindicato dos Jornalistas) has joined 600 partners in signing an open letter urging European leaders to protect AgoraEU, a multi-annual program that provides funding for journalism. The appeal follows a proposal by the Irish presidency to cut the AgoraEU budget by 30%, which would reduce funding by approximately €2.6 billion from the estimated €9 billion program.

Signatories argue that the proposed reduction in media sector allocation—from a requested minimum of 20% to a proposed 11.7%—threatens media pluralism and press freedom. The union noted that media outlets are already facing severe financial risks and the rise of news deserts and disinformation. Additionally, the union expressed concern regarding the lack of response from the Portuguese government since April regarding the importance of this funding for democracy.
