Jovanny González dies while under judicial reporting in Venezuela

Jovanny González, a former political prisoner in Venezuela, died on August 26 due to advanced metastatic cancer. González had been released under precautionary measures that required him to appear periodically before courts.

The human rights organization Fundehullan denounced the Venezuelan state, holding it responsible for González's death. The NGO argued that the government failed to grant humanitarian measures or amnesty despite his critical health condition. They stated that forcing an oncology patient to comply with judicial summons constituted a violation of the rights to life and health, as well as a form of disproportionate treatment.

González was originally detained in May 2017 during anti-government protests in Barinas while serving as a parliamentary assistant to Wilmer Azuaje. Both were arrested by Sebin officials and charged with various offenses, including illegal possession of war weapons and resistance to authority. Human rights groups and opposition leaders have characterized these detentions as arbitrary and political.
