Joven Club de Computación y Electrónica marks anniversary in Cuba

The Joven Club de Computación y Electrónica (Youth Computing and Electronics Clubs) in Cuba is celebrating its anniversary, marking nearly four decades since its founding on September 8, 1987. The initiative, originally launched by Fidel Castro, was designed to democratize access to technology and bridge the digital divide for children, adolescents, and the wider community.

Over the years, the network has expanded to more than 600 facilities across the country, reaching rural and remote areas. While early efforts focused on basic digital literacy, programming, and applied electronics, the project has evolved to address modern technological challenges, including artificial intelligence, digital services, and electronic payments.

In the Granma province alone, 47 facilities continue to support the nation's digital transformation. Officials emphasize that the project remains a vital social tool for providing free access to computing resources for those without equipment at home, including elderly citizens and people with disabilities.
