JPJ seizes luxury vehicles and targets tire rental schemes

The Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ) has conducted extensive enforcement operations, seizing 4,098 luxury vehicles valued at approximately RM5 million. The crackdown, known as Op Luxury, took place between July 1 last year and October 23 this year. Seized vehicles included high-end brands such as Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, Ferrari, and McLaren, owned by various individuals including VIPs, businesspeople, and influencers. The seizures were primarily due to expired Motor Vehicle Licenses (LKM), with some owners failing to renew licenses for over a decade or facing blacklisting due to unpaid summons.

In a separate enforcement matter, PUSPAKOM has expressed support for JPJ actions against a fraudulent tire rental scheme discovered in Gebeng, Kuantan. Under this scheme, standard tires are temporarily installed on commercial vehicles during mandatory periodic inspections to ensure they pass safety standards. Once approval is obtained, the compliant tires are removed for a fee of RM100 to RM150, and the vehicles return to the road with worn-out tires. PUSPAKOM CEO Mahmood Razak Bahman warned that this practice undermines the purpose of inspections, as safety certificates no longer reflect the actual condition of the vehicles on the road.
