Argentina LNG project seeks up to $16 billion in financing

YPF, Eni, and XRG are in the final stages of structuring a massive financing deal for the Argentina LNG project, which aims to export natural gas from the Vaca Muerta shale formation. JPMorgan and Santander are leading the fundraising efforts, which are estimated to be between $14 billion and $16 billion. This operation would represent one of the largest private project finance loans in Argentine history.

The total cost of the Argentina LNG project is estimated at $24 billion. The infrastructure plan includes two floating liquefaction trains, two cross-country pipelines, and a plant for natural gas liquids. The facility, to be located on Argentina’s Atlantic coast, is expected to have an annual production capacity of 12 million tons, with the potential to scale up to 18 million tons.

The partners aim to reach a final investment decision by November. The project is being developed under the framework of the Incentives Regime for Large Investments (RIGI) and seeks to leverage the vast resources of the Vaca Muerta shale play, which holds the world’s second-largest technically recoverable shale gas resources.
