Jamie Dimon proposes US-Europe trade deal linked to EU reforms
JPMorgan Chase & Co. CEO Jamie Dimon has proposed a comprehensive US-Europe free trade agreement designed to revitalize the Western alliance and counter autocratic pressure. In an opinion piece for the Wall Street Journal, Dimon suggested that the United States should offer a “big, beautiful economic and free-trade agreement” as an incentive for the European Union to undertake significant economic and military reforms.
Dimon’s proposal is contingent on Europe addressing long-standing structural issues to enhance its competitiveness and security. Key prerequisites include the completion of the Capital Markets Union and the Banking Union, reducing bureaucracy, and implementing recommendations from reports by Mario Draghi and Enrico Letta. He also emphasized the need for Europe to strengthen its defense capabilities, consolidate military production, and reduce strategic dependencies in energy and manufacturing.
The vision for a seamless trade network could potentially extend beyond Europe to include other democratic partners such as Canada, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and the Philippines. This approach stands in contrast to current protectionist trends and tariff-based policies in Washington, which have strained relations with traditional allies.
