JPMorgan Chase invests $5 billion in national security startups
JPMorgan Chase has deployed $5 billion in equity investments during the first year of its Security and Resiliency Initiative, reaching half of its initial $10 billion target for direct startup investments. The bank has also facilitated or financed more than $230 billion in projects through the program, which aims to support industries critical to U.S. economic and national security over a ten-year period with a total financing goal of $1.5 trillion.
The initiative focuses on five primary areas: defense and aerospace, advanced manufacturing and supply chains, energy independence, frontier technologies, and pharmaceutical and health technologies. Notable investments include a $1.4 billion funding round for Hadrian, an automated aerospace and defense manufacturer, and a $1 billion round for Castelion, a developer of low-cost hypersonic missiles.
Led by Todd Combs and overseen by CEO Jamie Dimon, the program represents a strategic shift for the bank, moving into direct equity roles typically held by venture capital firms. The initiative was established in response to geopolitical tensions in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as supply chain vulnerabilities and competition with China.
