JPMorgan warns of 2027 global food price surge
JPMorgan has warned that global food prices could rise by as much as five percent during the first half of 2027. This projected surge is attributed to the simultaneous impact of fertilizer shortages and the El Niño weather pattern.
Fertilizer supply is currently threatened by geopolitical conflict involving Iran, which has disrupted production and exports through the Strait of Hormuz. The Persian Gulf is a critical region, supplying over 36 percent of the world's urea exports. Dr. Sarah Kapnick, JPMorgan’s Global Head of Climate Advisory, noted that these disruptions could affect harvests within months.
The impact is expected to begin with corn crops in South America, eventually spreading to wheat in the United States and rice in Asia. Additionally, the El Niño phenomenon poses risks of drought, flooding, and heatwaves in key agricultural zones. Producers in Brazil and India are identified as being at particularly high risk due to their reliance on Persian Gulf fertilizers and their sensitivity to El Niño-related weather shifts.
