JPMorgan warns of economic risks and K-shaped divergence in the US

JPMorgan Chase is highlighting several underlying risks to the United States economy despite current signs of resilience driven by consumer spending and business investment. Jamie Dimon has identified five key factors that could pressure American savings, borrowing costs, and investment portfolios: large fiscal deficits, persistent inflation, high asset prices, rising interest rates, and shifting geopolitical conditions.

Furthermore, JPMorgan Asset Management warns of a deepening “K-shaped” economy. This phenomenon describes a widening gap where high-income households thrive due to significant stock and mutual fund wealth—concentrated in the top quintile—while lower-income households face increasing financial difficulties. The bank notes that capital gains are expected to outpace wage growth, potentially fueling macroeconomic and market instability.

Regarding productivity, the bank estimates that while artificial intelligence may boost total factor productivity growth in the US by approximately 1.2% annually, the impact may be more limited than some anticipate.
