JPMorganChase updates sustainable finance strategy to include energy security

JPMorganChase has announced updates to its sustainable finance strategy, aiming to balance emissions reduction with energy affordability, security, and reliability. The bank noted that “financed emissions are an imperfect metric” but confirmed it will maintain and extend its financed emissions targets for key carbon-intensive sectors.

The bank reported reaching $1.2 trillion toward its 2030 goal of facilitating $2.5 trillion for sustainable development. This progress was partially attributed to a broadening of eligibility criteria for green finance. The shift in approach follows political pressure in the United States regarding sustainability goals, which previously led the bank to withdraw from initiatives such as the Net-Zero Banking Alliance.

Heather Zichal, JPMorganChase Head of Center for Energy and Environment and Global Head of Sustainability, stated that meeting rising global energy demands—driven by AI deployment, factory power, and economic electrification—while balancing sustainability is a defining economic opportunity.
