JPP challenges Madeira government over student housing and elderly care

The political party Juntos pelo Povo (JPP) has issued several challenges to the Madeira Regional Government regarding social support and housing.

Alexandre Gomes, a representative for the JPP youth wing, called for a regional housing supplement for Madeiran students studying on the mainland. He noted that skyrocketing rental prices in areas like Greater Lisbon and Porto are creating financial barriers for students who must relocate due to a lack of local educational options. The proposal suggests a progressive support system based on household income to assist middle-class families.

Separately, JPP President Lina Pereira criticized the regional government for policies she claims penalize vulnerable citizens. She specifically addressed the reprogramming of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), which she stated involves a significant reduction of approximately 500 beds in continued care and residential structures. Pereira argued that while the government promotes home care services, the actual reduction in residential capacity contradicts this stance and negatively impacts the elderly and home care workers.
