JPYC stablecoin growth falls short of first-year targets
JPYC, Japan's first yen-pegged stablecoin, has reported a disappointing first year of operation, reaching only about one-quarter of its initial circulation targets. While total issuance has exceeded 10 billion yen, the actual amount in circulation remains around 3.2 billion yen (approximately $20 million).
CEO Noritaka Okabe attributed the slow growth primarily to strict Japanese regulations. Specifically, as a Type II funds transfer service provider, JPYC is subject to a 1 million yen limit per transaction. This restriction makes it difficult for corporations to hold large amounts of the digital currency without conducting numerous small transfers.
Despite these hurdles, the company saw significant activity in September following the addition of JPYC to the South Korean exchange Upbit. This led to a temporary surge in circulation and high trading volumes on platforms like Uniswap, with daily trading reaching approximately 35 billion yen. However, this interest proved short-lived, and circulation levels have since retreated.
