JPYC stablecoin integration expands into retail and corporate sectors

Efforts to integrate Japanese yen-pegged stablecoins, specifically JPYC, into daily commerce and corporate operations are gaining momentum through various pilot programs and technical developments.

At a recent industry event titled ‘Payment 3.0’, representatives from JPYC, INSPAY, HashPort, and Mysten Labs discussed the transition from traditional card and QR code payments to stablecoin-based systems. While global stablecoin issuance has reached approximately $306 billion, its use in retail payments remains extremely low. Proponents argue that stablecoins offer advantages such as near-instant settlement and ‘programmable money’ capabilities, which could reduce the high merchant fees associated with credit cards.

To facilitate adoption, companies are addressing technical and operational hurdles. Asteria’s ‘JPYC Gateway’ aims to integrate stablecoin transactions into existing corporate accounting and ERP systems. On the consumer side, self-custody wallets like Bitget Wallet are working to lower barriers to entry, such as gas fee complexities. Additionally, Mysten Labs is leveraging the Sui blockchain to provide high-speed, low-cost transaction processing, including mechanisms to reduce the burden of gas fees for users. Practical demonstrations, including stablecoin payments for crane games and vending machines, have already been conducted in Japan.
