JR Central announces S0 Series Shinkansen with autonomous driving

JR Central has announced the development of the S0 Series, a new Shinkansen model for the Tokaido and Sanyo lines, marking the first full model change in nine years since the N700S. The new fleet is scheduled to begin commercial operations in July 2029.

A primary feature is the implementation of GOA2-level autonomous driving. While a driver will remain on board, the system will automatically control acceleration, deceleration, and stopping at stations to improve precision and energy efficiency. The design also features a ‘Twin Remex’ nose shape inspired by bird wings to reduce air resistance, contributing to a projected 6% reduction in power consumption.

Safety enhancements focus on earthquake response. By utilizing millimeter-wave train radio, the system can reduce the time between earthquake detection and the start of braking from approximately 2 seconds to 0.2 seconds. Additionally, the braking distance at 285 km/h will be shortened by about 5% compared to the N700S.

Passenger comfort will be upgraded with expanded luggage spaces, larger toilets including female-only facilities with baby beds, and improved Green Car seating. The Green Car will offer more legroom and new seat configurations, such as partition and multi-function armrest seats. The company plans to introduce 25 sets by the first half of fiscal 2032.
