JR companies to introduce reserved seats for extra Shinkansen trains
JR Central, JR West, and JR Kyushu have announced updates to Shinkansen services to improve passenger convenience during disruptions. Starting in spring 2028, reserved seats will be available on extra trains operated during schedule disruptions caused by disasters or bad weather. These seats will be accessible exclusively through the ‘EX Service’ online reservation system.
Previously, extra trains run during such disruptions were operated with all non-reserved seats, often leading to long queues and overcrowding. By allowing online reservations for these specific trains, the companies aim to provide more reliable travel options.
Additionally, starting in autumn 2027, the companies will expand the hours during which passengers can use seat maps for seat selection via ‘Express Reservation’ and ‘Smart EX’ during nighttime hours. This change aims to resolve current limitations on seat selection and reservation numbers during late-night periods.
