JR East expands digital ticketing and launches teppay cashless payment service
East Japan Railway Company (JR East) announced that its new code‑based cashless payment service, teppay, will launch in autumn 2026. The service will be built into the Mobile Suica app, allowing users to transfer balances between Mobile Suica and Mobile PASMO, charge teppay balances to Suica, and overcome the previous ¥20,000 charge limit. Mobile PASMO is slated to receive the same functionality in spring 2027.
JR East is also rolling out its QR‑code ticketing system, ekine t Q Ticket, which began in the Tohoku region in October 2024 and expanded to the Tokyo area later that year. From November 2024 the service will cover the Shinetsu and Kanto regions, enabling passengers to purchase tickets online and board trains by showing a QR code on their smartphones, reducing reliance on paper tickets and staffed ticket windows.
