JR East launches overnight Shinkansen stays for August festivals in Japan

Japan’s East Japan Railway Company (JR East) announced that the E6 series "Komachi" Shinkansen will serve as an overnight accommodation for travelers attending two major summer festivals in the Tōhoku region. The service runs from August 3‑5, coinciding with the Akita Kanto Festival in Akita City and the Aomori Nebuta Festival in Aomori City. Passengers can board the train at about 21:30 and remain on board until the following morning, with ticket options ranging from 5,000 JPY for a single-seat “cabin” to 14,000 JPY for a premium green‑car seat. Amenities include bottled water and a small voucher for NewDays convenience stores, though passengers must stay in their seats and cannot leave the train between 00:30 and 05:30.

During the same Obon holiday period, JR East reported that Shinkansen reservation levels are slightly below those of the previous year, with a projected peak in travel demand on the down‑direction on August 8 and the up‑direction on August 16. Despite the expected surge, highway congestion in Iwate Prefecture is forecast to remain light, with no traffic jams longer than 5 km anticipated.
