JR East to expand Suica access to all stations by early 2030s

JR East has announced a strategic roadmap to expand Suica contactless payment access to all of its stations by the early 2030s. As part of its ‘Suica Renaissance’ initiative, the company plans to integrate its six current Suica service areas into a single unified area by the end of fiscal year 2026. This integration will allow passengers to travel across different regions without the current restrictions.

To achieve full coverage, JR East is developing a new flexible ticketing solution tentatively called ‘Dokodemo Kaisatsu’ (Anywhere Gate). This system uses portable tablet-like terminals that can be installed at stations or even on trains, making it easier to implement Suica services at smaller stations or on lines with infrequent service. By the end of fiscal 2026, the proportion of Suica-compatible stations is expected to reach approximately 60%.

Looking further ahead, the company aims to introduce ‘Smartphone Kaisatsu’ (Smartphone Gate) in the mid-2030s. This technology will utilize GPS and smartphone functions to allow passengers to enter and exit stations without the need for physical ticket gates, specifically targeting Mobile Suica users.
