JR East to host events for 60th anniversary of Azusa limited express
JR East has announced a series of commemorative events to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Azusa limited express service, which first began operating between Shinjuku and Matsumoto on the Chuo Main Line in December 1966.
A highlight of the celebrations is the “Azusa 60th Anniversary” special group train scheduled for December 12, 2026. This service will utilize the E655 series “Nagomi” high-grade rolling stock, featuring all-green car seating. The round trip will run from Shinjuku to Matsumoto, with travel packages starting at 41,000 yen for adults.
Other anniversary activities include:
• The sale of commemorative bento boxes featuring Koshu beef and limited-edition stickers. • A stamp rally at various stations including Shinjuku, Tachikawa, Hachioji, Kofu, Kamisuwa, and Matsumoto. • The release of special anniversary-designed craft beer. • The designation of special commemorative names for specific scheduled Azusa services on the anniversary date.
An official 60th-anniversary logo, created by JR East employees, will be used across station decorations and merchandise to mark the milestone.
