JR East to launch teppay QR code payment service for mobile Suica
JR East will launch ‘teppay’, a new QR code payment service integrated into the mobile Suica app, starting October 20. The service allows users to make purchases exceeding the standard 20,000 yen Suica balance limit. By completing identity verification via My Number Card, users can make single payments of up to 300,000 yen. Alternatively, users can link a View Card to pay up to their credit limit without pre-charging.
Teppay is compatible with the ‘Smart Code’ network, enabling use at over 1.7 million locations nationwide, including convenience stores like Seven-Eleven and FamilyMart, as well as electronics retailers and department stores. The service also supports peer-to-peer transfers, allowing users to send funds to friends or family for purposes such as splitting bills or allowances.
Users can earn teppay points, which are exchangeable for JRE POINTs. Looking ahead, JR East plans to expand the service to mobile PASMO in spring 2027, allowing interoperability between Suica and PASMO users. This initiative is part of the ‘Suica Renaissance’ strategy to transform Suica from a transit tool into a broader lifestyle payment platform.
