JR East to test hands-free ticket gates in Tokyo
JR East plans to trial hands-free ticket gates in Tokyo starting in the spring of 2027. The initiative is part of the Suica Renaissance, a ten-year large-scale reform project announced in December 2024 aimed at evolving the Suica system beyond the current requirement of tapping IC cards.
The company is focusing on Ultra-Wideband (UWB) wireless communication technology to enable walk-through gates that do not require physical contact or tapping. While facial recognition technology has already been introduced by other operators, such as the Yamaman Eucalyptus Hill Line and Tobu Railway, JR East is exploring UWB as a way to move past the era of tapping at gates.
