JR Kyushu to renew ‘Umikyo Saki’ sightseeing train in 2027
JR Kyushu has announced a major renewal for its ‘Umikyo Saki’ sightseeing train, scheduled for completion in spring 2027. The upgrades focus on enhancing the passenger experience through luxury amenities and traditional aesthetics.
Key improvements include the addition of six Green Class seats in Car 2, designed with window-facing orientations to provide better views of the Nichinan Coast and the Pacific Ocean. These seats will feature folding tables and decorative Kumiko woodwork. Additionally, a new onboard sales counter crafted with natural wood will be installed to allow passengers to purchase local specialty goods.
The renewal will necessitate changes to the fare structure. A new Green Class fee will be introduced, and limited express fees will be expanded to cover all travel segments, including the Miyazaki to Tayoshi section. To facilitate the renovation work, the train is expected to suspend operations starting in early December 2026.
