Hokkaido train derails after colliding with bear

An express train on the JR Soya Line in Hokkaido, Japan, partially derailed after colliding with a brown bear on the night of October 30. The incident occurred near Nakagawa Town between Teshio-Nakagawa and Toyotomi stations while the Sarobetsu 3 express was traveling from Asahikawa to Wakkanai.

Approximately 32 to 34 passengers and crew members were on board. Due to darkness and the potential danger of the animal being alive, passengers were unable to exit and were forced to spend the night inside the train. No injuries were reported, and passengers were evacuated via taxi the following morning.

JR Hokkaido has suspended services on parts of the Soya Line, with many trains canceled and replacement buses being organized. The Japan Transport Safety Board has dispatched investigators to the site. This incident follows a separate collision involving a deer on the JR Chitose Line on October 31.

The accident occurs amid a documented increase in bear encounters across Japan, attributed by experts to rural depopulation, climate change affecting food sources, and a growing bear population.
