JR West expands limited express seat subscription to four routes

JR West is expanding its “SUWALOCA” subscription service, which offers a 30-day pass for reserved seats on specific limited express trains. Following a successful pilot program on the “Kounotori” line, the service will now expand to four different commuter corridors connecting to Osaka.

The new subscription routes include services from Shiga, Hyogo, Nara, and the surrounding areas, such as the “Rakuraku Biwako,” “Rakuraku Harima,” and “Rakuraku Yamato” lines. For a monthly fee of 10,500 yen, eligible passengers can reserve ordinary car seats for their commutes. This model aims to provide commuters with the guaranteed value of a seat, catering to those who prioritize comfort and the ability to work or rest during longer transit times.

While the subscription covers the limited express seat reservation fee, passengers must still pay for their basic fare separately. The service is designed to encourage daily commuters to integrate paid seating into their routine, shifting the business model from one-off ticket purchases to recurring subscription revenue.
