JR West introduces humanoid robots for railway maintenance
JR West Japan has announced the introduction of two new types of specialized robots designed to enhance railway safety and reduce physical labor risks.
A heavy-duty single-arm robot, mounted on an aerial work platform, is scheduled for deployment in October. This machine is capable of lifting objects weighing up to 120 kilograms to assist staff with heavy lifting and equipment maintenance.
A mass-produced humanoid robot, featuring an improved design that is slimmer and lighter with an extended telescopic arm, is set to begin operations in November. This robot will be primarily used to clear vegetation and trees along railway lines that could obstruct train operations.
The company aims to reduce the manpower required for these tasks by approximately 30%. By automating high-altitude and heavy-duty work, JR West intends to mitigate risks such as falls and electric shocks, while creating a more inclusive working environment for employees of different ages and genders.
