Jürgen Klopp calls for democratic values amid rise of right-wing sentiment

Jürgen Klopp, the German national team coach, has made a public appeal for democracy and against the rise of right-wing sentiment in society. During his first press conference as coach, Klopp expressed a desire to reclaim national symbols for positive, inclusive values, stating he wants people to feel happy and proud of being born in, raised in, or moving to the country.

Klopp’s stance is deeply rooted in his family history. His grandfather, Karl Klopp, was a member of the NSDAP and faced legal consequences during post-war political purges in Rhineland-Palatinate. However, Karl Klopp eventually became a committed democrat, a transformation that Klopp cites as evidence that change and the triumph of good are possible.
