Jürgen Schmidhuber joins Sakana AI as Chief Scientific Advisor
Jürgen Schmidhuber, a prominent researcher often referred to as the ‘father of modern AI,’ has joined the Tokyo-based startup Sakana AI as Chief Scientific Advisor. Schmidhuber, known for his work on Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks and foundational deep learning concepts, will lead the company’s new RSI Lab.
The RSI Lab focuses on Recursive Self-Improvement (RSI), aiming to create a self-reinforcing research cycle where machine intelligence continuously enhances itself. This research builds upon Schmidhuber’s historical work in meta-learning and autonomous agents.
Sakana AI intends to leverage this expertise to develop ‘world models’ that simulate physical interactions. The company’s long-term goal is to advance physical AI for applications in robotics and manufacturing, bridging the gap between neural network architectures and advanced robotics.
