Jérôme Barella Charged with Murder and Rape in Gers Child Death Case

Jérôme Barella, a 41‑year‑old interim worker, remains the main suspect in the killing of 11‑year‑old Lyhanna, whose body was found on 4 July in a disused agricultural silo near Puycasquier, Gers. The disappearance was reported on 29 May, and Barella was arrested the following day after being seen driving the girl away from her school in Fleurance.

Initially charged with kidnapping and sequestration, Barella was re‑charged on 15 July after an autopsy confirmed that Lyhanna had been raped, though the precise cause of death could not be determined. He appeared before a judge in Agen, was placed in provisional detention at Mont‑de‑Marsan prison, and now faces charges of murder and rape of a minor under 15, carrying a possible life‑sentence.

The case has drawn nationwide attention, highlighting alleged investigative failures and previous complaints of sexual abuse against Barella. Large police escorts escorted him to court, his home was searched on 6 July, and thousands rallied across France demanding stronger legislation against gender‑based violence.
