J.R.R. Tolkien reflections revealed in recovered BBC interview
Newly recovered footage from a 1968 BBC interview provides rare insights into the reflections of J.R.R. Tolkien regarding his literary works. In the interview, Tolkien discussed the personal inspirations behind ‘The Hobbit’, noting that a 1911 excursion in Switzerland served as a modified real-life experience for the character Bilbo Baggins. He also reflected on the tragic nature of his stories, stating, “I think the most tragic thing of all is how the good often do evil.”
Within the lore of Tolkien’s universe, the ‘Hundred-weight Feast’ is noted as a private gathering organized by Frodo Baggins on September 22, 1402, to celebrate Bilbo Baggins’ 112th birthday. The event’s name was a play on the British unit of weight, the hundredweight (112 pounds), marking Bilbo's age. Unlike his previous large-scale celebrations, this was a small gathering of twenty close friends held at Bag End.
