Juan Antonio Ávalos convicted of manslaughter in 2004 Toronto killing
A Toronto court has found 65-year-old Salvadoran national Juan Antonio Ávalos guilty of manslaughter in the death of his wife, Rosaura Tolentino Ramos. The incident occurred in August 2004 in northwest Toronto, where the victim died from a stab wound to the neck.
Ávalos fled to El Salvador shortly after the crime and remained there for two decades. He was eventually apprehended in El Salvador on January 24, 2024, via an international red notice, and was extradited to Canada on August 15, 2024.
The verdict has resulted in the cancellation of a separate scheduled trial for second-degree murder. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for January.
