Juan Ayuso booed for wearing Spain jersey at Tour de France

Spanish cyclist Juan Ayuso appeared at the Tour de France’s Stage 11 signing tent wearing the national football team’s jersey after Spain defeated France in the World Cup semi‑final. He had promised on the rest day that he would don the shirt if Spain won, and kept his word, saying it was meant as a celebration rather than a provocation.

The gesture provoked mixed reactions from the French crowd, with some spectators shouting and booing. Ayuso removed the shirt before the start of the stage, which ran from Vichy to Nevers, to avoid further tension. He explained to the media that the act was simply “to honor what we are achieving” in football and to show pride in Spain’s progress to the final.

At the time of the incident, Ayuso was fourth in the general classification and leading the young rider competition. He also expressed excitement about the upcoming World Cup final, noting that a showdown against Argentina and Lionel Messi or against England would both be “a beautiful final.”
